A classic in story and moral about valuing and refitting useful things. Irish Mike and faithful steam shovel Mary Anne have been overtaken by diesel and gas powered models. They find a small town with a need and do their stuff, digging the town hall basement in one day but---forget to leave a way out. A little boy suggests that Mary Anne become the furnace in the new building and Mike be the caretaker, a simple and useful answer. The illustrations are wonderful, and there's that thrill of 'all's well' at the end. 44 pp. Hardback
