"Music by Stephen Simon, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and narrated by Yadu.

These award-winning recordings in the style of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf add greatly to the material available to teachers and parents to encourage their children not only to read, but to listen and appreciate classical music. Imagination runs free when children use ears first.

What's included:

  • Casey at the Bat (3768)
Poem by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. "The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day..." and we're off for a day at the ballpark through Steven Simon's music. Once again we are invited to imagine the scenes and action as we hear in narration and music the famous 1888 poem. We learn about the author and how the poem became so popular. The composer gives us his insight into his composition and there are activities to add to the CD and guide.
  • Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (3769)
Story and pictures by Virginia Lee Burton. Will Mike and steam shovel MaryAnn be able to dig the town hall basement in one day! What child hasn't thrilled to the tension of these man and machine working their hearts out to meet the deadline and the little boy who saves the day! Uilleann bagpipes really catches the ear as Mike's theme. Then the quodlibet and musical quotations of familiar tunes remind us of other stories. After the story, we hear about the author and how she wrote her stories and we hear the composer tell us how he was thinking when he wrote the composition. Then we hear the story again. In the CD guide are a few activities, a steam shovel with parts defined, the tune and lyrics for Mike's song, and information on author, composer, and other people involved. CD & Guide"
